Sightseeing The Netherlands.

The Dutch have a distinct culture of their own and there are many symbols and habits associated with them. Here is a list of must see spots when visiting The Netherlands:

  • Amsterdam.

  • Amsterdam canals and buildings
Amsterdam has more monuments than any other city in the world. There are almost 7000 national monuments in the city. You will find 144 large monuments, including civic buildings and churches. Most historic buildings are located within walking distance of eachother along the canals which encircle the city center.

The Amsterdam VVV (Tourist Information Office) has mapped out a number of interesting walking routes through various parts of the city. The booklets contain convenient street maps with dotted lines to indicate the routes. The route booklets can be obtained at the four VVV offices in Amsterdam (on Stationsplein across from Central Station, Leidseplein/corner of Leidsestraat, Stadionplein and on Platform 2 at Central Station), at the Holland Tourist Information desk at Schiphol Plaza and at various bookstores in Amsterdam.

The Amsterdam Pass is a perfect way to discover Amsterdam. This pass offers a public transportation ticket, free access to top museums, such as the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum and the Amsterdam Historical Museum. It also offers a free canal cruise, reductions on boat tours and a variety of attractions (like Madame Tussauds) and other museums, as well as discounts at selected restaurants. The Amsterdam Pass can be purchased for one (€ 26), two (€ 36) or three (€ 46) days and consists of a chip card, a public transportation ticket and a full color guide. You can purchase the Amsterdam Pass at the Amsterdam Tourist Office (VVV).

  • Rotterdam.

  • Rotterdam is a city very unlike Holland's other cities, due to the almost complete destruction of the city center in world war II and the rebuilding with an abundance of creative architecture. The Dutch refer to Rotterdam as 'Manhattan on the Maas'. The Netherlands Architecture Institute offers a number of very interesting architecture walks through the city. And offcourse a boat trip is a must during your visit to Rotterdam. The Spido harbour tour will show you the port of Rotterdam, the largest in the world. It is quite an experience to see the warfs, quays, docks and silos at such close quarters.

  • The Hague.

  • Madurodam in The Hague
The Hague is a city of many faces. In the surroundings of the white city hall lies the modern centre for business and government. Lovers of historical architecture can enjoy it to their hearts' content in the grand old streets near the Binnenhof and the Noordeinde Palace. The Hague Marketing & Events company has put together an interesting architectural 2 hrs walk through the city centre, past beautiful structures built during the last two centuries. The architectural walk can be purchased at The Hague's Tourist Information Offices and starts at Central Station.

A visit to Madurodam in The Hague is a must. The miniature city gives a clear impression of the architectural movements that are or have been important in our country.

  • Delft.

  • Delft blue porcelain
Delft is one of Holland’s best preserved towns. The crisscross of canals, arched bridges, cobbled alleyways, hidden courtyards, market squares and grand town houdes make it feel like an open-air museum. The city of Delft is renowned all over the world for the Delft Blue pottery. In the 17th century (‘The Golden Age') Delft was one of the homeports of the Dutch East India Company. When the Delft potters became acquainted with the imported Chinese porcelain, dozens of small pottery factories arose, manufacturing Delftware. Delft Blue porcelain is still made by hand nowadays.
